Los Angeles designer Jeremy Scott is a confounding figure. His work is simultaneously extremely good while being extremely bad, extremely high end while being extremely low end, his work is extremely brilliant while being extremely stupid: he is a fashion designer of extremes, making clothing that confuse and entertain. His Fall 2012 collection is a new entry into his canon–but something is different. The collection is a little more…refined? Understated? Interesting? Whatever it is, it seems to work and, naturally, is going to be landing on celebrities for the next year (and blogs for months to come because, you know, he made couture underwear with Bart Simpson on them).
Playing with the concept of rainbow colors and late nineties Internet iconography, Scott splatters his pants, jackets, coats, dresses, and more in bright, bright colors. The collection definitely feels like something that Lisa Frank wishes she made in her heyday, pasted onto these models who look like various highlighter accented poodles. There are a few big standouts that you can definitely sense were bookmarked by people like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Roisin Murphy, and even Kanye West, including the hairy color spectrum cape, a self color-blocking fur cropped jacket, a clear Illuminati mouse finger raincoat, and gravity defying kaleidoscope coat. Of course, some joke pieces jump out that should not surprise anyone, like this House Party on acid hat and the guffaw worthy jumping unicorn mega-brooch (or whatever you call it). Yet, it’s a job well done and there are definitely a few looks we’ll be coveting.
Below you’ll find more from the collection that debuted yesterday at New York’s Fashion Week and, below those, you can watch his clothes in action in a video of the runway show.
