Sean Chao is a local artist who is consumed with creating tiny worlds. Much like detailed fantasy dioramas, he uses clays to create these characters and worlds where oval headed people, animals, nature, and construction overlap. They’re borderline cute and fucked up, they’re detailed and multi-disciplinary, and they are full of humor and joy, a perfect combination for a sculptor like him.
As he says, he conveys stories that “stand as odd little moments frozen in time,” allowing you to imagine what exactly is going on. The best example of this for me is his Sneeze series above and the moments where he personifies word play, like his “Ear Phone” character at top and “Runny Nose” character below. He can breath life into these funny little clay people, all of which look like they could be fantasy characters in the upcoming Miyazaki film, The Secret World of Arrietty.
Chao has been working for a few years in Los Angeles, recently working very closely with Giant Robot (he has been involved with about five shows since 2010). Check out his blog in addition to his website for more information.
