Not too long ago while in Yucca’s hidden treasure Lost and Found, we were introduced to Feal Mor, a local menswear retailer specializing in tops and outerwear, specifically sweaters. The company takes classic items for men and gives them a little bit of a twist, taking them from being ordinary to that right amount of delightfully weird.
Feal Mor was started by JP Plunier, an international type who started life in California by making a surf shop. In an interview he did with Bluefat, he explained that Feal Mor is his “resistance against the McMansion-ization of California,” keeping his clothes tied to a uniquely California mentality. Although they are a little to heavy for constant Southern California wearing, this is very apparent in his collection: the Full Sail collection is an iconoclastic imagining of the classic 4-button sailor sweater, coming in camoflague to stripes to plaid; the outerwear and jackets give items like pea coats and military jackets a stylistic punch to the stomach; and their Knit Zip Hoodies are a combination of being high style and casual at the same time. As Plunier says of the brand, he wanted to “make a few sweaters and pea coats that existed in my head.” What Feal Mor creates is definitely something very specific and unique, a clashing of inspirations and references.
Feal Mor also sells beanies and scarves and hats along with some kids and womens clothes (the kids’ clothes literally being smaller versions of the adult sweaters and the women’s being a few sweaters). The also have a good amount of home items, cycling items, and third party shoes and vintage items. If you want to get a peek of all things Feal Mor in one fell swoop, they recently opened a retail outpost in the new La Brea “cool” district below 1st and above 2nd, right across the street from American Rag. Check it out and definitely be on the lookout for just about every guy in town to be wearing these things around town very soon.
