I feel like we’ve all encountered the work of Erik Mark Sandberg in the past few years and have gone, “Woah: cool work!” but didn’t get a chance to catch his name. We recently saw Angelique Groh Tweet about him, mentioning he would be sharing a piece at Natalie Fabia’s Miss Hooker Beauty Pageant this Friday, which is when his hairy people clicked in our minds: this is that guy who makes those cool hairy people paintings!
Yes, Erik Mark Sandberg is a local painter who is blowing up and has a very particular style in his painting that envisions people as these hairy, happy, not-quite-right people. These creations are all portraits depicting these characters, who come in various forms on: some have hair, some are hair, some have distinctly defined features, some are a bit awash in hair, and some you can’t tell where the hair begins or ends. It’s an interesting area to be playing in, creating sometimes “sexy” or alluring people who–you know–are covered in hair and may actually be aliens from a not too distant planet. They’re obviously full of humor and life and some even have a dosage of pop culture, which is why the top photo may have reminded you of a certain Disney star.
His work also branches into sculpture, creating these hairy people as busts, as well as various large mixed media pieces that range from still lives to complete non-objective splashes of jagged color. And, again, you can catch a piece of his work Friday at Natalie Fabia’s Miss Hooker Beauty Pageant, if you are looking for something fun and artistic to do tomorrow night.
