K&L Wines on Vine is such a treat. It’s a wine wonderland: everything is good and the people there are just great! While taking a look at wines last week, all of them with their little notes about why they are good from the staff, one had a particularly large sign that said “OMG” on it. Because I am Cher from Clueless at heart, I investigated: apparently it was a wine made by Drew Barrymore, which the sign–seen above–blatantly said in a very self-aware way. We otherwise would have laughed and walked away; however, as Bobby pointed out, the label and branding was designed by Shephard Fairey. This whole thing was too silly to pass up.
We grabbed a bottle at the more-than-we-usually-spend price of $16.99 and toted it home on the train. We examined the bottle and let it chill, taking it out when we were ready to drink it. Starting with the label, it’s actually very nice and not very Fairey like, elegant and regal, clean and fitting for a wine bottle. I read in a few places that people were talking about how bad the label is but, you know what, I really like it and I think it’s perfectly fitting. Take that, haters!
Now, the wine itself. Let me preface by saying that I hate white wine. A light red, a rosé, a champagne: give me those any day of the week. A white? Not in my house. This wine though? A delight. It was so surprisingly good. It’s light and refreshing and so extremely drinkable. It’s crisp and fruity–but not sweet. That’s a big complaint I have with white wine in addition to them being so weirdly buttery and oaky, which of course is in relationship to Chardonnay. This is a Pinot Grigio, a wine variety I never cared for, thinking it was the needier sister of Sauvignon Blanc. If all Pinot Grigios taste like this, I’m about it. This is the perfect wine for sitting by the pool, sipping out of a govino plastic wine glass.
The wine is now available and is less than a month old. And, if you think Fairey and Barrymore are racking in the dough from this, surprise: proceeds of the wine go to charity, according to the back of the bottle. So, if you are looking for a nice Summer wine for a hot day, grab this. It’s a little pricey but it looks nice and is for a good cause and is damn good. Doesn’t get any better than that!
