Sperry Top-Sider is a classic brand going through a bit of a renaissance, as their classic shoes have been reappropriated by fashion snobs and hipsters alike. The shoe that was once a sailing and prep hallmark in New England is now seen on kids who frequent Intelligentsia and work as artists in Silver Lake. The shoes’ rebirth has led to a lot of new opportunities, one of them being a collaboration with similar lifestyle brand Penfield. The resulting collaboration are some pretty cool shoes that should have gone together a lot earlier than now.
Hosted by Fred Segal Santa Monica, the release of the shoe was a seaside party for both brands. A little bit of a free for all, equipped with people coming and going, grabbing frozen lemonade and vodkas, taking a Sperry tote, and leaving, the release of the products converted the Broadway entrance of the store into a Sperry/Penfield showroom. The room was decorated with rugged, New American products as well as Sperry boots and Penfield vests and flannels. It was interesting to look around and see the two brands independently of each other and then the four pairs of shoes both brands created at the center of it all.
The shoes are modified versions of their classics, revamped with Penfield staple fabrics to create totally new shoes. One of our favorites was the Penfield A/O Woodland Penny. The shoe is typically a light brown/camel shoe, but–as you can see below–the Penfield version is camouflage. It’s a simple change and could have been slightly hectic in execution, but the resulting shoe is just as classic as the original–perhaps more sophisticated and edgy, even.
The collaboration yielded other amazing shoes, including a corduroy boat shoe and a tweed boat shoe and boots, that were seen around the shop. Even though the event was quite busy, there was no shortage of people stopping in and purchasing the new goods from off the shelves. Be sure to stop by to grab both brands’ products at Fred Segal and take a detailed look at all of the shoes here.
