Last week, we were honored to attend a really, really great event: Seize Sur Vingt‘s West coast launch at the Santa Monica Fred Segal. The small event was held after hours at the location in the area where SSV’s clothes are going to be sold. With owners James and Gwendolyn Jurney present, the husband and wife duo swept through the space, working with partygoers to get them fitted in shirts that were perfectly tuned just for them.
The New York based brand is relatively young and mostly contained to Manhattan, where they have a flagship store on Greene St. as well as a post in prestigious local shopping hub, The Plaza. They have been doing well, but want to grow their brand to afford them more opportunities for different projects. They have very strong online sales, especially here in California. Thus, they are expanding their brand out West by way of a spot in Fred Segal.
There are two stars of Seize Sur Vingt: the high quality shirts along with owners, James and Gwen Jurney. The shirts were remarkably simple, well constructed, and light, which is was honestly not expected from “dress” shirts plucked directly off of the rack. They weren’t stiff or overly crisp, but almost like light linen constructed for semi-formal wear. The lighter shirts were a part of their more permanent collection, but they do have thicker, seasonal ones that almost resemble flannel (albeit, a very light flannel). Most of the shirts have a very slim fit, but can be adjusted and customized to however you like your shirts to fit.
This is where James and Gwen came in, presenting a very unique opportunity: they personally fitted, measured, and outfitted customers in new shirts. We spoke with them and they had been at the store since it opened setting up and fitting people all day. Gwen even mentioned she had not eaten at all that day but had sipped a coffee once or twice and was enjoying a spirit at the party (this was at 8:30PM). The couple are incredibly kind, hard working, funny, and have a great working chemistry that would make anyone coupled jealous. As they fit you, James takes measurements, detailing your sizes very, very fast, as Gwen takes notes in a Field Notes book, giving quick commentary on what she sees removed from the person being fitted. They speak in an almost fashion/fit code that you wish you understood so that you could speak with them about it because they are so dang sociable and nice: you can tell that they are as splendid of dinner guests as they are retailers.
Seize Sur Vingt have a huge variety of patterns (with very, very funny names, some of which are plucked from Billy Joel songs) to choose from and are definitely worth looking into buying from if you are in the market for new dress clothes. They are a great, new American brand you should be supporting thus, if you are in Santa Monica, stop by the Fred Seagal on 500 Broadway to snatch up a shirt. And, for a more personal touch, visit their shop in New York where you will undoubtedly be able to get a fitting from them. We definitely took advantage of the opportunity and are super excited for our Moonshot Woodstock shirt to come in.
