Ron Thompson is a Los Angeles based designer and illustrator. He’s made a lot of great work for clients like GOOD magazine art and CODA Automotive’s advertisements. One thing that stuck out in his body of work is that he makes pillows. It isn’t that he hands sews them or embroiders them himself but they are instead designed gifts he makes for friends. What a clever idea!
The pillows are all for the either weddings or babies and are obviously made with these people and their interests in mind. The two above were for weddings and draw from objects that represent something about the two people, be they super California and wine-y or somewhat whimsical and aeronautical. The ones for the newborns are a little more sweeping into general ideas but–like the newlywed pillows–they are so wonderful because he builds out entirely new visual worlds each time. This isn’t a one-sided item either: you get both sides of the coin. This is one of their best features.
He has a few more pillows (and other objects) on his website that are equally are as good and all just as finely made with a specific person in mind. These objects and his work all have an incredibly personalized touch while still playing into the same aesthetic and voice. It’s not very often that a designer/illustrator type can achieve this. Ron does this with such ease!
