What happens when you combine a super rad skateboarding brand with one of the most well known backpack retailers in the world? You get a pretty sweet bag, that’s what. Keith Hufnagel’s Huf and Jansport have joined forces to create a limited edition backpack: the Huf X Jansport Backpack.
Last night, both brands had a celebration of the product’s launch at Downtown’s Golden Gopher. The event was quite exclusive as the brands had essentially taken over the bar for the night with help from friends at Jägermeister, PBR, and The Gorbals (who were making gourmet BLTs and Grilled Cheese sandwiches all night). Decorated with lit up signs of Jansport products and projections of both brands’ names, things worked really well with the Golden Gopher (which, truth be told, we anticipated to be a strip club but were pleasantly surprised to be a really, really, really cool place).
The bag being celebrated was sprinkled about on mannequins and, most notably, in the “Liquor To Go” beer shop display case at the front. The bag, which you can see above, is a Jansport and Huf’s take on Jansport’s 1970s roll-top pack, detailed with new items (like leather zipper pulls, new labeling). The product is really great and coming from a homegrown California brand (that has recently moved to LA after getting their start in SF). The bag is sold out on the Huf website but, hopefully, new ways to grab it will be popping up soon (but, you may be able to grab one at local stockists Station Twenty Six, Suru, Primitive Shoes, and Huf’s own Fairfax destination).
If you can’t snag a bag, definitely stop by Golden Gopher, which was the perfect place for the event. They have a beer market to get to-go beer (thank you 1905 liquor license!) and stellar drinks, courtesy of being under the 213 Nightlife umbrella. There are ample fun things to do (video game tables, pool table, a photo booth) and a sweet outdoor area that could potentially be obnoxious with weekend smokers. The space is perfectly aged and, although in a semi-sketch area, it is worth the trip for a drink if you are already Downtown.
