Fairfax’s IKO IKO is featuring a great little collaboration of Los Angeles makers: Building Block + WAKA WAKA’s custom limited edition leather bags. The two makers teamed up to make these beautiful oddball bags that are part geometric meditation and part tanned flesh tones with wooden details. They are a delightful means for you to carry around your belongings and will certainly get you some “What’s that?!” looks.
For those of you unfamiliar (Ahem, us.), Building Block is an LA design team composed of sisters Kimberly and Nancy Wu and they pride themselves on making goods that straddle between industrial, minimalist, luxurious, and utilitarian. WAKA WAKA is the moniker for Angeleno Shin Okuda who makes handmade furniture and objects. The resulting collaboration are these 1D looking bags, tassels, and posters that merge the two’s aesthetics effortlessly. You have Building’s very dainty and subdued leathers mashed with WAKA’s extreme wooden geometric niceties. The best part of the collaboration is the usage of sun-tanning the leathers, which yielded shapely tattoos on the materials.
The whole collection feels like a young graphic designer had a wet dream that his or her designs came to life as handbags and more. They’re extremely cool and will get any owner of the alliterative collaboration’s pieces at least two hundred more cool points. The bags are very limited run and you can even custom order them at IKO IKO. We’re not sure what the asking price for them are but we can make an educated guess that they are very pricey.
