“Keep looking south on Hollywood until you come to a rusty grayish green fence, yeah it’s really shady looking. No, there’s no sign. Drive slowly or you’ll miss it….”
….I never have to give directions like that again! Barnsdall Park is dedicating their brand new monument/sign today. I’m thrilled the park is finally getting the recognition it deserves! And, in honor of the new sign, I thought I’d take a minute to extol the many virtues of Barnsdall.
LAMC Farmers’ Market
Every Wednesday from 12pm-6pm. Pick up fresh produce and then stroll the grounds of Olive Hill. I can’t imagine a more beautiful setting for a picnic lunch in LA.
Tour this magnificent Frank Lloyd Wright home commissioned in 1919 by oil heiress Aline Barnsdall. Hollyhock is the first Wright structure in Los Angeles. Construction was overseen by his son, Lloyd Wright and his then assistant Rudolph Schindler.
Barnsdall Art Center
Classes for adults or children in painting, sculpture, jewelry, bookmaking- it just goes on and on. Don’t miss the free weekly art workshops for families every Sunday. Up to date info on those here.
Friday Night Wine Tastings
I can’t wait till summer for these wine tastings with a view hosted by Silverlake Wine.
Again, I’m biding my time until summer when these start up again.
Cool Lamp Posts
These lamps were made to mirror the design on the Hollyhock House which Wright created to resemble the hollyhock flower, Aline Barnsdall’s favorite.
Keep abreast of all things Barnsdall here. This self-proclaimed “hidden gem of a park” is hidden no more.
