It’s always great to get a surprise! A few weeks back, while (somewhat frantically) preparing things for The Fox Is Black’s first Quarterly contribution, Bobby met with local artist and zine master Jesse Tise, who was contributing a little something to the project. He also had a little surprise for us: a nicely packaged up new space zine surprise!
The pack contained three things: a light cardboard screenprinted card, a nicely bound zine, and a surprise little space guy who literally popped out of the zine. It is in no way a shock that the little gift was so great since a few months ago Jesse sent us a similar package full of space comics.
What’s amazing about these pieces is how detailed they are, which speaks to the screenprinting work along with the eye for detail he has. The card (above) and spaceman (far below) were screenprinted delicately, the card layering light blue and red over each other to create a hot and cold space vegetation scene while the spaceman uses two blues slightly off of each other to make the happy spaceman dance in his orbit.
The zine is the best part, with it’s debossed silver-into-deep blue cover, bright pink pages, and an all-seeing-eye sticker clasping it shut. The title page announces the “Starry Eyed” theme of the pocket zine, taking you on a quick trip through hyperspace and back (with stops to bounce in a spacesuit around plants and observe distant planets). The final page did share that it one of 200 made and, naturally, you can likely poke around Jesse’s website to find it. This would be a great surprise to send someone in the mail and, who knows, you may find something similar in a Quarterly mailing…
