It’s not often that I get to be excited about a new Metro project. We recently got new bus benches throughout the city, but there’s absolutely nothing exciting about them. Then I saw these plans for a series of canopies to reside over the Red Line and my faith was renewed. Designed by Steven Casano at STV Incorporated these beautiful canopies look like they gently float over the stations like steel hammocks.
I like that these canopies have a minimal foot print on the ground, still allow light to pass through and into the gateways, as well as providing a bit of contemporary architecture to the city. The only thing I can really think of off the top of my head that’s comparable is the Vermont/Santa Monica Metro stop, though I’d say these canopies are a much more elegant and less brutalist approach. Cheers Metro, lets see more of this around the city.
